I didn’t sleep at all last night and was awake and rearing to go at 2am. My health is deteriorating and I’ve all but lost my voice. We departed Candler, NC at 4am. Stopped in at Knoxville, TN to get some flu medication!
After our stop at Knoxville, on this leg we passed through Nashville and Memphis. We didn’t stop though as we lost 24 hours due to the transmission problem with the van and couldn’t get hold of the friend we were going to visit in Memphis.
After covering off Tennessee, we crossed the Mississippi River (which, by the way, was a little underwhelming) and headed across the state of Arkansas, battling ~40 degrees Celsius heat and sunshine. Loving it! Arkansas is my second favourite state so far, simply because of the warmth.
After exiting Arkansas and entering Oklahoma, we passed through Tulsa on our way up to Kansas. A lot of miles and states covered today and another big day to come tomorrow. We want to get as much time on the West Coast and in Canada as we can.
Kansas was extremely hot and humid. We pulled into a friend’s house (he wasn’t home, we were just borrowing his yard) at around 2300 and it was still warm enough that I was wearing only shorts and a singlet. During the night even opening up the windows on the van didn’t help with the heat – when there was a breeze, it was hot air blowing in! I had a rather restless night though the heat did help with my congestion and sore throat.
So far am having a great time – this to me is ultimate freedom.
